Dr. Wills serves as the dean of the School of Theology, professor of church history and Baptist heritage, and senior fellow of the B.H. Carroll Center for Baptist Heritage and Mission. Prior to his service at Southwestern he served in several roles at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, including Professor of Church History and Dean of the School of Theology. He is the first person to serve as dean of the school of theology at both seminaries.

Dr. Wills is the author of Democratic Religion: Freedom, Authority, and Church Discipline in the Baptist South, 1785-1900 (OUP, 1997), Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 1859-2009 (OUP, 2009), and The Salvation of Souls: Nine Previously Unpublished Sermons on the Call of Ministry and the Gospel by Jonathan Edwards (Crossway, 2002). Additionally, Dr. Wills has contributed chapters to multiple publications including, Theology, Church, and Ministry: A Handbook for Theological Education (B&H Academic, 2017), The Lord’s Supper: Remembering and Proclaiming Christ until He Comes (B&H Academic, 2011), Southern Baptist Identity: An Evangelical Denomination Faces the Future, (Crossway, 2009), and Baptists and Mission (Paternoster Press, 2008). He has also contributed journal articles for the Southern Baptist Journal of Theology, Journal for Baptist Ministry and Theology, and Baptist History and Heritage.

In 2019, Dr. Wills delivered the David and Lanese Dockery Lectures on Baptist Thought at Union University. He is a member of the Evangelical Theological Society and regularly presents at academic conferences.

Dr. Wills enjoys hunting, fishing, and hiking. He is husband to Cathy and father of Sam, Abby, James, and Maggie. He and his family attend Travis Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.
