Weekly prayer opportunities available for SWBTS, TBC

Each Monday at 11:45 a.m., faculty, staff, students, and any others are invited to gather in the Rotunda of the Memorial Building for a time of prayer, Scripture reflection, and submission to God’s leading.  

Southwestern Seminary and Texas Baptist College students, faculty, and staff are also invited to join for prayer at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in MacGorman Chapel before the chapel service.

Chase to speak at TBC Chapel Oct. 12

P. Chase Sears, assistant professor of biblical studies at Texas Baptist College, will be the speaker at the TBC Chapel at 10:00 a.m. Oct. 12 in Draper Auditorium (Mathena 112).


Winter term registration is open

Registration for the winter term for Southwestern Seminary and Texas Baptist College is now open through the beginning of the classes which start as early as December 12. Click here for more information, including available courses, dates, and registration.


Winter scholarship applications are being accepted Oct. 10 – Nov. 11

Scholarships are available for students for the winter term. Click here for the application and more information. Applications will be accepted through Nov. 11.


Canada Missions Practicum Interest Meeting to be held Oct. 20

An interest meeting for a church planting class and practicum in Canada will be held at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 20 in Mathena 220. The practicum will be led by Ian Buntain, associate professor of missions and director of the World Missions Center. Participants will leave May 7 for two weeks in Canada.

Most Canadians are three generations removed from the Christian faith that was prominent in its founding era, said Buntain, who is a Canadian native. In Canada, urban missionaries are exploring biblical ways to reach people who are not looking for a church. For more information, click here.


Invite a prospective student to Preview Day Oct. 21

Preview Day is coming Oct. 21, and perhaps you know someone who is looking for an undergraduate or seminary degree. Consider inviting prospective students to come to the fall Preview Day. For those exploring training in the School of Church Music and Worship, the fall Preview Day is also the time to audition for ministry-based ensembles, graduate assistantships, and scholarships.


“On Your Way” fellowship to be held for prospective missionaries Oct. 25

A fellowship for students heading to the mission field will be at 6:00 p.m. Oct. 25 in Mathena 220. The “On Your Way” fellowship will discuss what future missionaries can do now to prepare for life on the field and what to expect during the first few months of transition. RAC swim lessons session 1 begins Nov. 1

Attention Parents: The Recreation and Aerobic Center (RAC) swim lesson for session 1 begins Nov. 1. Registration forms will be available at the RAC Control Desk beginning Oct. 11. The swim instructor is Hailee Betts, email: hbetts@swbts.edu. The schedule for session 1 is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Oct. 12 writing workshop to discuss writing a book review

The Center for Writing Excellence will host a workshop from 10:00– 11:00 a.m. Oct. 12 in Mathena Hall 219. The topic for the workshop is “Writing a SWBTS Book Review.”


Fort Worth Hall residents to compete in Mario Kart Tournament

Calling all Fort Worth Hall residents! Do you have what it takes to be the fastest kart racer in the Res Hall? Come prove your Mario Kart skills in a real life go-kart tournament from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Oct. 14 at Route 377 Go Karts. Prizes will be awarded for the fastest racer and the best costume.


International Mission Board candidate consultant to be on campus Oct. 17 – 21

Joel Sutton, an International Mission Board (IMB) candidate consultant, will be on campus Oct. 17 – 21 to visit with those who want to know more about IMB missions. He will also host a pathways meeting at 6:00 p.m., Oct. 18, in Mathena 214. The pathways meeting is for students who want to know more about ways to serve with the IMB.

Fall Festival to feature fun and food

Southwestern Seminary and Texas Baptist College students are invited to enjoy a festive evening of games, food, a pumpkin patch, and inflatables in front of the B.H. Carroll Memorial Building. Land Center Lectures to examine “What Does It Mean to be Human?” Oct. 25-26

C. Ben Mitchell, who is the retired Graves Chair of Moral Philosophy at Union University and a leading evangelical ethicist, will be the featured speaker for the Land Center Lectures, to be held Oct. 25 – 26 in the Seelig Banquet room of the Naylor Student Center.

The topic of discussion is “What does it mean to be human?” The lecture series is free of charge, but reservations are required for the Oct. 26 lunch. For more information, click here.


Interest meeting to be held Oct. 25 and 27 for spring Revive the Nation evangelism initiative

A Revive the Nation (RTN) student interest meeting will be held immediately after chapel at 11:00 a.m. Oct. 25 and 27.  Matt Queen and Hannah LaFavor will meet on the left of the stage in MacGorman Chapel.

The RTN initiative equips and sends students and faculty to share the Gospel by serving churches across the nation during spring break. Students will have an opportunity to gain practical ministry experience, build ministry connections, receive field mentoring, and participate in community outreach in partnerships with local churches. Southwestern pays the travel expenses, and the host church provides lodging and meals.

Class credit is available for student participants. Students who have already earned credit for the class are encouraged to participate. Those who cannot attend one of the meetings should email rtn@swbts.edu. For more information, click here


Nov. 1 is deadline for New York mission trip

The deadline for the spring break mission trip to New York City is Nov. 1. Ladies of Southwestern Seminary and Texas Baptist College are welcomed to participate in a week-long mission trip to the most populated city in the United States. Students are encouraged to join Everyday Evangelism teams

Everyday Evangelism is an evangelistic focus to encourage Southwestern and TBC students to share the Gospel. The teams visit parks, shopping centers, and other locations to share the Gospel. For more information and specific times, click here.


Campus News

Wakefield uses biblical counseling skills learned at Southwestern to create a safe haven for women

Jenifer Wakefield has known what it’s like to need a home and a safe haven. The three-time Southwestern Seminary graduate grew up with a rocky family life which led her to run away from home when she was 10 years old. She stayed away so long that she ended up stealing food and was picked up by the police Wakefield was taken to a juvenile detention center until she was placed at Texas Baptist Children’s Home when she was 11.

More than 50 pastors, staff members, students, and Bible study leaders gathered Oct. 3 for a preaching workshop at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, gleaning insights from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians.

Seminary community gathers for prayer for God’s mercy, favor

Heeding the call to prayer for God’s mercy and favor issued by Interim President David S. Dockery, more than 100 Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Texas Baptist College faculty, staff, and students gathered in the rotunda of the B.H. Carroll Memorial Building Oct. 3 for the first of many scheduled prayer gatherings for the seminary and college community.

Southern Baptists of Texas Convention gives $250,000 gift to Southwestern Seminary

Nathan Lorick, executive director of the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention (SBTC), presented a $250,000 gift to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary interim leadership O.S. Hawkins and David S. Dockery to support the faculty and to help the school with its current financial challenges, Oct. 3.
